A pilgrimage site steeped in history
For over 1,000 years, Rocamadour has attracted pilgrims and visitors who come to admire this sacred place. The legend of Saint Amadour, the miracles attributed to the Black Madonna, and the seven sanctuaries built into the cliffside have made Rocamadour a major stop on the Way of St. James.
Don't miss it:
- The Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The Notre-Dame chapel, home to the famous Black Madonna
- The Grand Staircase (216 steps), once climbed on one's knees
- The Bishops' Palace and the view from the castle
For an authentic visit, we recommend reaching the village via the Voie Sainte, an ancient pilgrimage path that descends gently towards the town. After visiting the sanctuaries, return via the Chemin de Croix, a wooded path marked with stations, which leads to the castle and offers spectacular views over the valley.
A scenic route not to be missed, starting from theAllée des Noyers
From our guesthouse, we highly recommend taking the scenic route (not the main road). It passes through a series of charming little villages that we love:
- Gluges, at the foot of the cliffs, is perfect for a break by the Dordogne
- Creysse, a typical lotregion, with its double-apsed church and old mills
- Saint-Sozy, famous for its walnuts and foie gras
- Meyronne, with its lovely view of the Dordogne and its quiet corners
- Lacave, with its cave accessible by a small underground train
Next, the road follows theOuysse, a discreet and wild river, before climbing onto the limestone plateau. You then enter a luminous, limestone landscape, heading towards Calès, before arriving at Rocamadour. This journey is already a wonderful introduction to the site.
🌿 Nature walks that we wholeheartedly recommend
The Moulin du Saut trail
This 4.3 km trail follows the Alzou gorges to the ruins of the Moulin du Saut, nestled within a protected natural area. Accessible to all (easy to moderate level), it traverses unspoiled nature and remarkable rural heritage.

Rocamadour, a village that comes alive all year round
What we also love about Rocamadour are the many events that bring the village to life:
The Brive-Rocamadour (March) : a long-distance cycling, mountain biking, trail running or walking event between the Corrèze and Lot
Cheese and Rocamadour AOP Festival (June): entertainment, gourmet market and Rocamadour AOP tastings
Rocamadour Sacred Music Festival (August): sublime concerts in the basilica or in the valley
Rocamadour Hot Air Balloon Festival (September): a sky filled with hot air balloons at sunrise — magical!
